When a nine-year-old Arab refugee is left stranded in Stockholm following the death of her grandfather, a group of local street kids take her in and fight for her right to remain in Sweden. Thankfully for the frightened lass, friendly neighbor Mirre hatches a clever plan to keep her gal pal around by housing her with hard-rocking neighbor, Johan. Though at first reluctant to take responsibility for the young refugee, Johan soon develops a close bond with the girl as the neighborhood kids team up to expose a gang of thieves who are stashing stolen goods in a nearby basement. Later, when benevolent social worker Janet catches wind of Amina's plight, she joins the fight to ensure that she isn't deported while simultaneously falling for the scruffy-but-lovable Johan in the process.
While not a major box office hit, Kidz in da Hood went on to win film, director, leading actor, script and music awards at the Golden Bugs. At the most unexpected moments, kids and adults start to sing and dance, and the film becomes a vibrant, often funky movie that all ages can enjoy. Fluently moving with the music, the camerawork is a vital ingredient to the film’s success.
