This recent Canadian smash hit is an unflagging entertaining coming of age story, filled with terrific verve and wit. Its hero, is a young man, confused (or in denial) about his gay sexuality, largely due to the scorn of his homophobic father, towards his supposedly effeminate ways. The film plays to a broad audience, rather than specifically targeting a gay viewer ship. It depicts the extraordinary lives of ordinary people in search of love and happiness.
Zac was born on Christmas Day, something he never overcomes, as he endures Midnight Mass on a birthday that, in any case, doesn't really count. As a teen he hero worships 70's era David Bowie and maintains a girlfriend despite his attraction to men. A family drama unlike any other, well-balanced and successful, while not falling into the trap of using convenient clichés. The official Canadian entry for the "Best Foreign Language Film" category at the 2005 Academy Awards. |
